Grounds for Teaching Institute - Environmental Issues Workshop 2008 - Presented by the Maryland Association of Environmental & Outdoor Educators (MAEOE) was hosted by Environmental Concern on our campus and featured presentations by EC Educators and EC Vice President Gene Slear.

 


Bay Bridge Boat Show
April 24 - 27, 2008
 

Environmental Concerns exhibit at the Boat Show featured a floating dock used as an oyster nursery, and used as a floating wetland. It also included interactive displays on Chesapeake Bay wetland ecosystems.

 


Chesapeake Women's Network monthly meeting

EC hosted the May meeting for the Chesapeake Women's Network on our campus. Meeting attendees were treated to a campus and nursery tour, and dinner. EC President Suzanne Pittenger-Slear is a member of CWN and regularly attends their meetings.

 


Celebrating the 2008 Maryland Green Schools and Centers - MAEOE

Environmental Concern was awarded with a certification as a Maryland Green Center by the Maryland Association of Environmental & Outdoor Educators. EC helps local schools to become Maryland Green Schools.

 


Spring Native Plant Sale and Open House

Plant Sale

The Spring Native Plant Sale is a semi-annual event where visitors are able to purchase native plants from our nursery, discuss native gardening questions with staff, participate in educational activities, tour the nursery facility and campus wetlands, and have a picnic lunch.

"Olly the Oyster" Book Signing

Author Elaine Allen and illustrator Kelly Nash were at EC signing copies of their children's book titled "Olly the Oyster Cleans the Bay".

Ohio State University Swampfest

Ohio Swampfest

EC President Suzanne Pittenger-Slear attended the Swampfest celebration at Ohio State University and as Chair of the U.S. National Ramsar Committee she had the honor of presenting the certificate for the designation of the 24th US Ramsar Site to the OSU President, Dr. Gordon Gee. The Olentangy River Wetland Research Park is the first in Ohio to be designated as a "Wetland of International Importance.".

 


Wetland Keeper Award Presentation

Wye House in 2008

Environmental Concern presented the Tilghman Family with a "Wetland Keeper Award" in appreciation of their contribution to the future health of the bay. The Tilghmans own the historic Wye House Farm andworking with EC, created a Living Shoreline to control erosion and improve water quality.

 


Members Day at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

EC participated in the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Members Day event by making a presentation on the Living Shoreline that is scheduled for construction at the Maritime Museum. A ceremonial "dig" was held as a ground breaking ceremony.

 


Ramsar Convention on Wetlands - COP 10 Conference

Ramsar Korea

The Ramsar COP10 “Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People” was held in Changwon, Republic of Korea from October 29 through November 4th.  COP (Conference of the Contracting Parties) is the annual meeting of the 158 countries that have ratified the Ramsar Convention. Each year the Contracting Parties gather to assess the progress of the convention and the sustainable use of wetlands to date, share knowledge and experience on technical issues, and plan their own and the secretariat’s work for the next three years.

Eastern Shore 2010 Achievement Awards

The Eastern Shore Land Conservancy held its 10th Annual Land Use Planning Conference and presented the Eastern Shore 2010 Achievement Awards on November 7, 2008. The Local Leadership award was presented for the St Michaels Nature Trail Project, a joint project by the Town of St Michaels, the St Michaels Rotary, Elm Street Development, and Environmental Concern.

 


St Michaels Nature Trail, Wilson M. Shook Memorial Bridge Opening Celebration

Memorial Bridge

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the new Wilson M. Shook Memorial Bridge on December 2nd. This footbridge is part of the new St Michaels Nature Trail.

The Rotary Club of St Michaels, Environmental Concern, and other local businesses are sponsors of the Nature Trail. EC Vice President Gene Slear attended the ceremony.

 


Wildfowl Trust of North America, Inc's 6th Annual "Wet & Wild" Auction Fundraiser

The Wildfowl Trust of North America, Inc held it's 6th Annual "Wet & Wild" Auction Fundraiser at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center. Environmental Concern provided a Gift Certificate as an auction item for the event to support the Wildfowl Trusts mission.
